Suppressing America’s Voters

Voter Suppression

If you’ve had a chance to peruse my website, which needless to say I strongly encourage, you’ll see that I talk a lot about the Jim Crow era —100 years of racial discrimination that lasted from the end of Reconstruction to the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s—when Black folks were subjected to terrible violence and injustice, including being denied their right to vote.  Now this humble spirit worries that many white Americans might be on their way to joining Blacks and other minorities in losing their right to vote as well.  Given that President Trump wasn’t able to get his disgraceful “SAVE America Act” passed by Congress in time to impact the 2026 midterm election, he’s now trying to suppress the vote in every way he can.

Trump likes to claim “the only way Democrats win is if they cheat,” but now he realizes that in 2026 Republicans can only win if they cheat, something he’s working hard to make happen.  His attempt to restrict mail-in voting is guaranteed to throw the election into chaos, especially given some states vote almost entirely by mail and others have already sent out their ballots.  This effort is on hold pending a decision from the Supreme Court, but in the meantime Trump’s homeland security chief says he’ll send ICE agents to polling places if there is a “specific threat.”  Armed federal agents, of course, have no business being near election sites and represent a threat to our democracy, especially if the only “threat” is that Republicans lose. And among many attempts at voter suppression nationwide, the Republicans are trying to vastly reduce the number of polling places in Tarrant County, TX (Ft. Worth), which will be key in determining the Texas Senate race.  When it comes to stealing the 2026 election, Trump has almost as many irons in the fire as he has new monuments to himself in Washington, DC.

Despite all his obnoxious bravado, Trump is clearly a desperate man.  He knows that if the Democrats take back the House he will be impeached again, and if they also gain control of the Senate he may very well be convicted this time.  And even if their impeachment effort fails, they will surely launch a myriad of investigations into what is clearly the most corrupt president and administration in American history.

Trump has as Many Ideas to Steal the 2026 Election as He has Monuments to Himself.

All the while, the war with Iran—which Trump denies is a war but nevertheless claims he won—goes on, presumably well beyond the 2026 election.  As a result, gas and diesel prices remain high and are likely to get a lot higher.  And since the price of diesel fuel is an important determinant of grocery prices, the cost of feeding a family will only continue to rise.  Are people really going to fall for the ridiculous lie that Venezuelan oil is going to replace what is no longer passing through the Strait of Hormuz?

How much suffering will Trump’s MAGA supporters endure before they realize that trans girls participating in sports is not the most important issue facing the country?  How much longer will they accept the absurd premise that access to affordable, quality healthcare represents socialism?  How much longer will they be willing to turn a blind eye while Trump and his troop of oligarchs wallow in the obscene wealth and inequality that is surpassing that of the 19th century robber barons?  And does anybody really care if Trump declares that “Lake Ontario” is now “Lake America”?

Maybe if Trump wasn’t worried about all the same things, he wouldn’t think it was necessary to steal the 2026 election.
